Jika dilihat dari sejarahnya, Danone dulunya adalah perusahaan kecul dimana didirikan pada 1918 oleh Isaac Carasso di Spanyol. Perusahaan ini memproduksi yogurt. Sepuluh tahun kemudian, dibangunlah pabrik pertama di Prancis. Selama pendudukan Jerman di Prancis saat perang dunia 2, Daniel Carasso (Anak Issac Carasso) memindahkan perusahaannya ke New York. Saat di Amerika Serikat ini, Daniel memiliki partner bisnis bernama Joe Metzger yang kemudian mereka mengubah mereknya menjadi Dannone. Di tahun 1953, Daniel Carasso menjual bisnisnya di Amerika Serikat dan kemudian memutuskan kembali pulang ke Paris untuk mengelola bisnis keluarga di Prancis dan Spanyol. Tahun 1961 , Danone melakukan merger dengan Gervais dan mengubah namanya menjadi Gervais Danone. Tahun 1976, Garvis Danone melakukan merger dengna BSN atau Boussois-Souchon-Neuvesel.
